Prehab Over Rehab: Why It's Smarter to Treat Pain Before It Starts

Most people come to a massage therapist when something already hurts. That makes sense; pain is a good motivator. But it also means we're almost always playing catch-up.

We want to make the case for the opposite approach: prehab over rehab. Rehab is what happens after an injury. It's necessary, it works, but it's expensive: in money, in time, and in everything you can't do while you're recovering. Prehab is the work you do before the injury. It's catching the tight hip, the restricted shoulder, the asymmetry in how you move, and addressing it while it's still just a quirk and not yet a problem.

Prehab Exercises

Here's why this matters.

Injuries almost never come out of nowhere. By the time a muscle strains or a joint flares up, there's usually been a warning sign for weeks or months: a stubborn area of tightness, a loss of range on one side, a movement that just doesn't feel right. Those are the things a good assessment catches. And those are the things that are genuinely easy to fix when they're small. This is the whole philosophy behind Massage and Motion, and it comes down to three things: treat what's bothering you, teach you why it's happening, and help prevent it from coming back.

Rehab work post injury

The treating part is the massage table. The teaching and preventing parts are what make the difference six months later. It also changes the math. A regular maintenance session every few weeks costs a fraction of what you'd spend, and lose, being sidelined by an injury you could have seen coming. Prevention is almost always the better investment, it's just less obvious because the injury you avoided never announces itself. You don't have to be hurt to benefit from bodywork. In fact, the people who get the most out of working with us are the ones who come before the breakdown, not after.

Stay in motion. That's the whole point. Book a session or start with an assessment to find out where your body is heading.
