TMJD & Intraoral Release in Old Saybrook, CT
If you wake up with a sore jaw, hear or feel a click when you open your mouth, get tension headaches that radiate from your temples or behind your eyes, or have been told you grind or clench at night, your TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) may be the source.
A dental nightguard protects your teeth, but it doesn't address why the surrounding muscles are tight in the first place. TMJ massage at Massage and Motion targets those muscles directly, externally (jaw, temples, neck, base of skull) and internally (intraoral work), to release the actual source of dysfunction.
What is TMJ dysfunction?
The temporomandibular joint is the hinge connecting your jawbone to your skull, just in front of each ear. When the muscles that move this joint become chronically tight or unbalanced, the result is what's broadly called TMJ dysfunction (sometimes TMD). Symptoms include:
-
Jaw pain or tightness, often worse in the morning
-
Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when chewing or opening
-
Locked jaw: temporarily unable to fully open or close
-
Tension headaches, especially in the temples
-
Ear pain or pressure without infection
-
Pain that radiates down the neck or behind the eyes
-
Tooth pain with no dental cause
-
Difficulty chewing tough foods
-
Facial muscle fatigue by the end of the day
Causes vary: clenching during stress, nighttime grinding (bruxism), forward-head posture (often called "tech neck"), past dental work, jaw injury, or muscular asymmetry. Most of the time it's a combination.
What intraoral massage involves, and why it works
Intraoral massage means the therapist wears sterile gloves and works on the muscles inside your mouth, the medial pterygoid, lateral pterygoid, and the inner aspect of the masseter. These muscles do most of the heavy lifting in jaw movement, and they cannot be effectively reached from the outside alone.
The work is precise, brief, and not painful when performed correctly. You remain in full communication with the therapist throughout, if anything is uncomfortable, you signal and the technique adjusts. Many clients report meaningful relief after their first session, especially with morning jaw soreness and tension headaches.
A typical TMJ Release session includes:
-
External work on the jaw, temples, masseter, and SCM
-
Neck and upper trapezius release (these muscles work in concert with the jaw)
-
Intraoral release of pterygoids and inner masseter
-
Sub-occipital release at the base of the skull
-
Take-home stretches and self-release techniques

Frequently asked questions about TMJ massage
Is Intraoral Massage safe?
Yes very safe, when performed by a trained, licensed therapist using sterile gloves. The technique is brief and precise. Clients with active oral infections, recent dental surgery, or specific medical conditions should consult their dentist or physician before booking; let your therapist know in advance.
Will I need to do anything different at home?
You'll leave with 2–3 self-release techniques and stretches tailored to your case. Most clients also benefit from a few habit adjustments, tongue position, posture cues, hydration, and sometimes a check-in with their dentist about a properly fitted nightguard.
Do I have to do intraoral work every session?
No. Many clients use intraoral release for the first few sessions, then switch to external-only sessions or Facial Gua Sha for maintenance. The approach is individualized.
